چکیده

algae had no significant effect on DMD, CH4 or NH4–N (P>0.374), but lower CH4 emissions were generally observed with increasing protection level. Slower turnover rate and lower protection level may serve to promote toxic effects of the algae on rumen microbes, as indicated by the observed onset of floating digesta mat instability, which may reflect reduced production of fermentation gases (CH4 and CO2).

Survey of Salmonella populations from swine waste- treatment technologies

Swine manure is generally used as fertilizer and applied to fields for growing agricultural commodities. Salmonella and other pathogens have frequently been isolated from swine wastes.1-3 Land application of Salmonella-contaminated manure may pose an environmental risk if movement occurs to surface and groundwaters.4-6 Sustainable swine production requires the development of innovative and cost...

A Literature Review of Swine Heat and Moisture

Current ASAE standards of heat and moisture production are based primarily on data collected nearly four decades ago. Feedstuffs, swine practices, growth rate, and lean percentage have changed considerably in that time period and have a substantial effect on both heat and moisture production. In fact, recent research has shown that high-lean gain swine are more susceptible to high environmental...

Incidence of salmonellae in fecal samples of production swine and swine at slaughter plants in the United States in 1978.

Nine swine slaughter plants and 19 swine production units were randomly selected for sampling from the six highest swine-producing states representing a total of 64% of the United States swine production. Three composites of 10 fresh swine fecal samples were obtained from each slaughter plant, representing three different farm sources of swine. Two composite fecal samples were collected from tw...

Pigs in Space: Determining the Environmental Justice Landscape of Swine Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in Iowa

Given the primacy of Iowa in pork production for the U.S. and global markets, we sought to understand if the same relationship with traditional environmental justice (EJ) variables such as low income and minority populations observed in other concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) studies exists in the relationship with swine CAFO densities in Iowa. We examined the potential for spatial c...
